A flashing versus solid check engine light communicates different levels of urgency. A steady light means the vehicle's onboard diagnostics detected a fault that needs attention. Why a Trouble Code Is Not a Parts List

An OBD-II scanner retrieves diagnostic trouble codes stored by the vehicle. The code identifies a system, circuit, or operating condition that fell outside an expected range. It does not always identify the failed part.

What to Observe Before the Technician Arrives

Write down when the warning first appeared and what the vehicle was doing. Useful details include:

  • Whether the light is solid or flashing
  • Whether it flashes constantly or only under acceleration
  • Any shaking, hesitation, stalling, or loss of power
  • Temperature or oil-pressure warnings
  • Smoke, unusual exhaust, or fuel and burning odors
  • Recent repairs, refueling, battery work, or maintenance

Do not keep recreating a dangerous symptom for the sake of collecting information. A brief observation is enough.

When to Stop Driving

Pull over when safe and arrange assistance when the light is flashing and the vehicle runs poorly, or whenever you also see overheating or oil-pressure warnings. Stop for smoke, a persistent fuel smell, severe vibration, loud mechanical noise, or a major loss of power.[1]

A solid light may also require an immediate stop if those symptoms are present. The word “solid” does not override other warning signs.
